Want to step up your spring style with minimal effort but maximum impact?
Celebrity stylist Michael Fisher has the hints (and socks) for you.
This is a man who knows what he is talking about. Not only does he love socks and colour as much as we do (check out The Block Collection for proof), he dresses the likes of Hugh Jackman, Benedict Cumberbatch, Bryan Cranston, Jake Gyllenhaal and more. A secret weapon of style.
Enough said.
He has kindly shared his top tips for using socks to simply refresh your look this season.
A bit of colour can go a long way to breathing life into your look. Add your favourite power pop with a spring shade of Simply Sartorial (pastels are always a winner) or opt for a two-tone hit with a pair from Michael Fisher’s LSC collaboration, The Block Collection. His pick? Mediterranean Olive.
Ankle-grazing hemlines is a great way to bring your trousers up to speed stylistically speaking. Have an old pair that could do with a face lift? Upcycle them by cutting off the hem at the ankle and giving them a cool rock-and-roll frayed look. Cropped trousers in khaki or spring neutrals are also a winner. Your socks will get more airtime this way – so choose wisely. For Michael, it has to be Smoke from The Block Collection, but you could also go for a cool check like Shaken & Stirred.
Socks and shorts is a sartorial conundrum as old as time. While some may tell you that it is a major no-no, the truth is that socks and shorts can be a playful style statement that really works. If you want to keep it a bit subtle, opt for the classic white crew sock or our Simply Sartorial in Cream for a bit of a Paul Newman vibe. For the bolder among you, a solid colour sock like our Simply Sartorials with shorts and a simple T or jumper plus white trainers can look really great. Want more of an edge (and warmth on cooler days)? Shorts with black boots (can’t go wrong with classic Doc Martens) and a jumper.
Set aside you denim. Chinos can stay in the closet. Spring is all about colour from head to toe. Colourful trousers are all what it’s all about this spring. Pastels are a gentle way to tackle this trend. Lilac, soft pink, mint. Try Blazer with its two purples with lavender pants, for example. Pair with clean sneakers and a T-shirt and you are good to go.
A well-executed tonal look is hard to beat for a style statement. Michael Fisher has created some seriously show stopping tonal looks in the past (Sebastian Stan all in lavender, for example). If you’re a beginner to tonal dressing, you can’t go wrong with the blues. Choose slightly different shades of the same colour for each piece and watch how they work.
It is definitely a trend that has worked hard to earn acceptance in the mainstream, but socks and sandals are here to stay. And can look really quite stylish. Pick a pair of classic sandals from Birkenstock – we love the clean Arizonas in black full-grain leather – add some smart dark trousers (tapered moleskins perhaps), a timeless striped T and a playful dash of colourful sock (Nugget from The Block Collection for example), and you’ve got a subtle, fun and easygoing spring look.
